Don’t fear big data complexity
Don’t fear big data complexity
Complexity is considered the enemy of most IT projects. The goal is to simplify hardware and application implementations. But when it comes to big data, this general rule may not apply.
Big data complexity is growing. There are separate tools for consuming data, storing data, transforming data, analysing data, sorting data and visualising data. Organisation may have different systems for working with live data and historical data. This has created complex application of data storage and analytics systems. The reason is that traditional data architecture can’t keep pace with demands because traditional data architecture does a good job of consuming moderate amounts of structure data, but when the volume and variety of data increases, the traditional architecture struggles to meet the demand.
A typical enterprise big data architecture could be laid out in which data goes to a staging area where the focus will be on quality and usability. For many organisations this means Hadoop. From there the data will either be moved in a relation database or moved into analytic sandboxes. Some of these sandboxes may be used for business intelligence functions while other sandboxes used for mining data for meaningful correlations. The next layer could be an analytic application that put mining results into production on an ongoing basis.
This may sound like big data complexity run uncontrollable and disruptive. The fact is that this is all part of building a modern data architecture that supports businesses become more competitive. The current ecosystem of data storage and analysis tools is overcrowded and that businesses are not served by having to implement a unique application for almost every function. This may not be the case forever, but it’s the reality the businesses are dealing with today.
It’s important for businesses to look beyond the big data madness and figure out what tools they need to fit their specific business problem. Otherwise, big data technology could consume IT data centre without delivering any return on investment.
